Buildings account for approximately 70% of electricity consumption, 40% of energy use and 40% of all CO2 emissions in the United States. Greater adoption of smart building design and technology could yield $40 to $50 billion in gross national savings in 2020. This briefing will address how information and communications technology (ICT) can reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions and provide an introduction to the Sustainable Technology Environments Program (STEP) rating system and guide, which encourages the use of ICT to make buildings smarter, reduce paper consumption and reduce GHG emissions associated with travel.

As attention to building performance has grown, so too has the number of tools and programs for the measurement and reporting of performance attributes. Each tool and program has developed to fill a specific need, but nonetheless, there appears to be confusion as to the purpose and need for so many different schemes. This dialogue will provide an opportunity for interested members of the building community to discuss the various programs, identify opportunities for consistency where appropriate, and further differentiate the programs. Dialogue outcomes may include identification of opportunities to promote the importance of benchmarking and the valuable role of underlying datasets like the Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS).
Programs to be covered include: EPA Energy Star, DOE Commercial Building Asset Rating, USGBC LEED, GBI GreenGlobes, ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient, BOMA 360, ASHRAE/GBA DASH, DOE Building Data Taxonomy, and ASTM BEPA.
